Our Story

St. Matthew’s New Life United Methodist Church (SMNL) is a vibrant and loving Christian faith community in the heart of Baltimore, Maryland which strives to make disciple of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our broader community and local congregation. Our faith community is comprised of people of various ages, life experiences, and faith backgrounds. As servants of Christ we are sent into the world to engage in the struggle for justice and reconciliation. We seek to reveal the love of God for men, women, and children of all ethnic, racial, cultural, and national backgrounds and to demonstrate the healing power of the gospel with those who suffer. We strives to transform our communities through meeting needs, planting seeds, and building hope (Hospitality, Offer Christ, Purpose, and Engagement) as a means for people to experience and explore a relationship with Jesus Christ.

SMNL come into being in 2012 when two former United Methodist Churches (New Life and St. Matthew’s) united to create a new faith creative faith expression in Baltimore under the pastoral leadership of the Reverend Eric W. King. In 2016, the SMNL family grew when it welcomed members of the former Centennial Caroline Street United Methodist Church into the family.

As a Methodist or Wesleyan faith community, we believe we are called together for worship and fellowship and for the upbuilding of the Christian community. We advocate and work for the unity of the Christian church. We call all persons into discipleship under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.  Since its beginnings in 1729, United Methodists have embraced the idea of “the ministry of all believers.” While pastors lead the churches, every United Methodist member is in ministry, supporting Christ and the church with their prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness.
